Stone Tape Theory

by Roddy Lumsden

Whosoever has pushed a tear of bread
into a glossy pool of gravy
has entered history

paying the ticket price, playing statues
as they lift to their mouths
a fine brine of self,

striking the figures of those minor gods
who light the mineral tapes
of creek and cliff:

the shirtless walker raising his palm
to close out the sun’s clamour
or some castaway

fetching up the cold gush to her lips
as she hangs at the stream
and a dawn hunter

dipping his thumb in a kicking breeze
to taste the is, are, am,
to prove the future.

Note: stone tape theory is a scientific explanation of ghosts which suggests that minerals may store visual and aural information and later ‘replay’ it.
