Sixteen Haiku

by Daniel Clark

empty chairs
the statues have gone back
to the other museum
(George Seferis)

1
at the end of the garden a pear tree alone

2
hair tied –
silent sheep
eating nettles

3
he carves his name into his tree

4
the last rays
leaves reaching
for light

5
summer’s breeze
plastic box
december

6
a plaque on a chair in a fire

7
messages daubed
in delible ink
              washed away

8
trash talk
cops and canapés
promises in jet fumes

9
salmon
swimming in silence
no current

10
apathy appears
the answer
to our non-questions

11
where were you
when the seas
were warming?

12
fig leaf
              in a bottle

13
beyond the trees
a cloud
descended

14
message in a bottle in rising seas

15
ancient oak
blinks
a hundred years

16
empty chairs
the people have gone
back to sleep
