No Double Digits

by Saoirse Lennon

About this poem

Since I started writing, it has always been very private to me. Many people I’m friends with didn't even know that I enjoyed writing so when I entered into the competition I was extremely apprehensive and I had absolutely no intentions of ever performing what I wrote.

When I answered the phone to Joelle and she told me I had won I was overwhelmed. Within that phone call, I believe I asked Joelle ‘what is going on?’ nothing short of five times. Having the chance to work with her and receive feedback from Kate Tempest as well, I really couldn't be any happier or more shocked. Although I was surprisingly calm and collected when I performed to my workshop class, The Royal Festival Hall will be a completely different story; but I’m absolutely honoured to have this opportunity. I cannot thank my teachers or Joelle enough for encouraging me to take part.’
