An Acre of Grief

by Amy McGinn

after Elizabeth Garrett

oh how good i am at leaving     the lights on
at watching the flies buzz around a dead
thing                how quiet i must be       to let him
stay hidden in the garden like this        to take the
blame like eve          shall i undress the mannequin
turn the lights off and prey       on the dead
thing         will he be here   watching the unbecoming
the unfolding     the dismantling   of sin
the fly    a witness        the butterfly   an apologist
the worm        here to clean up the mess
