The Outsider in the Sun

by Jake Reynolds

The sun
Was like a flashing sword
That ran down my veil
Of tears

The sun
Was a red-hot breath
Of fire, splitting from
My whole being

I tightened the trigger
I felt the sweat
The sun destroyed the balance
Of the beach

I’d been happy
The bullets sank, leaving a mark
Like giving four sharp knocks
At the door.

(from ‘The Outsider’ by Albert Camus)
